The goal I celebrate today is the result of endless hours of networking, years and years of writing, endless hours of turmoil, a path of consecutive decisions that lead me to various places and people, a fierce inner determination, a never-give-up attitude, a leap of faith, taking a chance on myself, trusting in others, trusting in myself, having the courage to put myself out there, the highest of highs, the lowest of lows and, finally, a decision to take action and commit to a dream. What I celebrate today is all of these things – all together in one big giant loveable mess that brought me right to this very moment, this very spot with this giant smile on my face.
I have a tradition that today, I had the pleasure to part take in once again. Today I sent in 2 chapters of my book for publication in early 2018. I WILL be a published author in a compilation book that will be sold around the world. This moment, my friends, is definitely worthy of taking a moment out of my day to just sit and soak it in.
There is a place I go when I have completed a big step in my writing career – or should I say, what I deem to be a big step in my writing career. I sit in this place, sipping a glass of wine to reflect on all the hard work and sacrifice that brought me to that very moment.
The truth is, this moment is not the only moment that I celebrate. I have learned that if I only anticipate the end of the journey, I miss out on all the parts in between. Each step, each small milestone is just as valuable as it gets you to the next, and the next, and the next. Each step holds its own special place in the chain and it offers lessons and moments to celebrate along the way. If we only focus on the end game – once we get there – it is often disappointing. One moment can’t hold the weight of a lifetime of building. One moment can’t give the joy of a journey of trials and triumphs. One single moment is the result of many others and the beginning of many more – nothing more, nothing less. To hang a lifetime of hopes on one single moment will always be a little anti-climatic leaving you disappointed and wanting more.
As an entrepreneur, this lesson carries through to all aspects of running a business. In my first year, I can tell you that everything grew quickly and happened at lightening speed – partly because I had no road map to follow and therefore the consequences of my decisions created new twists and turns that always brought me to new and foreign places.
I have goals – big goals – and goals that I will meet one day I am sure of that. What I am careful not to lose sight of is the fact that the goals that I label and give names to are not stand alone goals. They are part of a much bigger wheel that has been turning for a while already and will continue to turn long after that goal is met. Reaching one goal is the result of many smaller goals and achievements that came together in exactly the way they were supposed to – nothing more, nothing less.
If I have learned anything it is that the whole entirely of your experiences are worth celebrating. Any event that requires a little courage, a little fight, a little determination is worth celebrating all on it own. Any decision made that pushes limits, that takes you out of your comfort zone, that begins with a big inhale, that scares the crap out of you, that has an unknown outcome, that requires a leap of faith, that leaves you standing all by yourself, that requires risk, that makes your heart beat a little bit faster, that gives you insane joy to imagine and that is met with resistance……here’s a little secret …..that’s the good stuff!!
These events – big, small or anywhere in between deserve to be celebrated and recognized for their contribution to the end result. They all get their curtain call as the entire company takes its collective bow.
Until next time – dream, experience and love your life.
